The Brief

Supertram has been an iconic part of Sheffield’s public transport network since it first opened in 1994. Originally owned by Stagecoach, it has recently been taken back into public ownership. As part of this transition, OCPR were contacted by Supertram to assist in driving engagement and ticket sales / app usage through various digital services including Meta (Facebook Ads). Generating awareness, reach and engagement, as well as ticket sales and app downloads were all high priority for the Supertram team to get the wheels turning following the transition.

Reach and engagement

THE CHALLENGES

Cold Targeting: Trying to inspire action from people who were unaware or unengaged with Supertram previously, to inspire action in engaging with the brand and downloading the Supertram app.

Creative Input: Creating engaging creatives and ad copy on reels and static graphics, whilst adhering to strict brand and tone of voice guidelines that were laid out by the Supertram team at our initial meeting.

Collaboration: Supporting digitally in boosting campaigns that were originally scheduled for DOOH display, tram stops and TV screens – turning these into Meta Ad creatives for consistency. Collaborating directly with offline marketing agencies, as well as the wider Supertram team.

THE WORK

Intensive Audience Planning: The Supertram service audience is extremely wide, as the service can be used by anyone, at any time. Coming up with ideas through audience planning helped us to streamline campaign targeting – by finding focus areas that could dial down on audiences most likely to use the tram for different purposes (travelling to work/university, attending events, going shopping etc).

New Campaign Generation: Throughout the project, we have had to evolve our approach to add in more targeted campaigns, along with campaigns that support other marketing activities that Supertram are undertaking offline. Changing the audiences and creatives regularly to ensure reach to new people, and downloads from new users was maximised.

Reporting Feedback: Throughout every stage, we have been reporting back to key stakeholders at Supertram with weekly meetings and reports, along with extensive monthly reports and catch ups to clearly display the effectiveness of our campaigns.

THE RESULTS

Downloads: Within the first 6 months, our campaigns generated over 2000+ new downloads via the app started on the Supertram website

Ticket Sales: Supertram’s team reported an ongoing increase in on board ticket sales, and app activity including ticket sales including park and ride passes (targeted by many of our campaigns). Showing users were engaging with ad content and switching to public transport.

Increased Reach & Engagement: As part of our strategy we have been boosting social media content created by our team, to increase reach and engagement. This has resulted in interactions with social media profiles on Facebook and Instagram increasing month on month, through engaging posts and reels – leading to a large increase in followers on both platforms.

OCPR were approached by Supertram to support their ongoing paid advertising and social media efforts (supplemented by paid social budget). The initial goal was to grow reach and awareness, growing app downloads and ticket sales both on board and particularly via the TSY Supertram mobile app. The ongoing goal was to maximise the downloads from our campaigns, and reduce the cost of each new download by optimising targeted users, reaching as many new users as possible.
